Present:
The “Star of Gladness ʻUkulele” Limited Edition Kamaka ʻUkulele
For over a century, Kamaka ʻUkulele has been synonymous with excellence in Hawaiian craftsmanship. Founded in 1916 by Samuel Kamaka, the family-owned company continues to set the global standard for quality ʻukuleles. From pioneering the world’s first pineapple ʻukulele in 1928 to receiving the ʻUkulele Treasure Award and Hawaii Magazine’s Readers Choice Award for Best ʻUkulele Maker, Kamaka has earned its place as a cultural treasure. Their instruments are beloved by world-renowned artists, and Kamaka’s legacy is preserved in the ʻUkulele Hall of Fame Museum.
The song “Star of Gladness” written by original crew member Boogie Kalama on the 1976 maiden voyage, is a favorite of crew members to sing aboard Hōkūleʻa. To celebrate Hōkūleʻa’s 50th birthday, Kamaka has created the “Star of Gladness ʻUkulele,” a limited- edition masterpiece with deep cultural significance. Only 50 of these special instruments will be crafted.
The design features the Polynesian Voyaging Society logo and a stylized Hōkūleʻa, meticulously inlaid with wood from a cross section of Hōkūleʻa’s ʻiako (crossbeams). The North Star sits on the headstock under a brand new Kamaka logo debuted on this ʻukulele. The rosette of the sound hole is made with Blue Paua Abalone colored “Pacific Blue” representing Moananuiākea. This ʻukulele carries the physical history of Hōkūleʻa, blending its voyaging legacy with Kamaka’s world-class craftsmanship.
This model is available to order. Kamaka Ukulele will be donating a percentage of the profits for every model sold to the Polynesian Voyaging Society.
